BALTIMORE - US Lacrosse today announced the 24-player roster for the U.S. Under-19 women’s team, following three days of tryouts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The squad, which will compete at the 2007 IFWLA U-19 World Championships in Ontario, Canada, was chosen by the Women’s Division National Teams Selection Committee.
"I am very excited about the number of participants we had and the wide range of athletes who will represent us in the IFWLA U-19 World Cup," said Chip Rogers, chair of the Women’s Division National Teams Committee. "The Selection Committee did a phenomenal job in providing us with a group of the top U-19 athletes in the nation."
Nearly 150 athletes from 19 states competed for a spot on the Under-19 training team. Players must be 18 years of age or under on December 31, 2006 in order to be eligible and must not graduate from high school prior to 2007. The 24-player roster must be further reduced to 18 players prior to the start of the 2007 World Games next summer.
Wendy Kridel coached the U.S. team in each of the past two U-19 world championships and will once again serve as head coach of the American team.
"We had a great process with a number of qualified selectors," said Kridel. "It was a long, tiring, exciting and fulfilling experience. We had a chance to see everyone and saw some unbelievably talented athletes compete at the highest level. It’s going to be a fun group to work with and to coach."
The 2007 IFWLA U-19 World Championship will be held from August 4-12 in Peterborough, Ontario. The first U-19 women’s championship was held in 1995, with Australia defeating the U.S. in the title game. The U.S. team has won the last two championships, defeating Australia in the final game in both 1999 and 2003.
