Hall of Fame member Caleb Kelly, whose lifetime association with the sport of lacrosse ran the full gamut from player to coach to official to administrator, passed away this week at his home on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He was 95.
Kelly played for Johns Hopkins and was one of the members of the school's undefeated 1932 team that represented the United States at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In addition to passing the Maryland State Bar exam, working as an attorney and serving in the Army Air Corps, he continued his involvement with the sport on many fronts. Kelly served as the first head coach of the newly-formed University of Baltimore lacrosse team, and also served as an active official for 16 years. Working under the sponsorship of the USILA, he helped to rewrite the lacrosse rule book in 1959.
Kelly was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame Foundation, one of the forerunners to US Lacrosse, and served as the Foundation's executive secretary for a number of years.
He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1969, and was also one of the members of the inaugural class of the Greater Baltimore Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
