McCabe, Casey Powell Named Captains |

Pat McCabe and Casey Powell have been selected as the captains for the 2006 U.S. men’s lacrosse team. The captains were selected by a team vote and the announcement was made by head coach John Desko.
The U.S. team is now in Canada preparing for the 21-team 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. Opening ceremonies for the event will be held on July 13 and the U.S. team begins play on July 14 against Australia at 4 p.m. (Eastern). The U.S. team has won six consecutive ILF championships dating back to a loss to Canada in the 1978 championship game. McCabe is playing on his third U.S. national team. In 1988 he was a member of the Under-19 team that captured the ILF U-19 championship in Adelaide, Australia and in 1998 he was a member of the U.S. team that won the world title in Baltimore. He’s a three-time all-star in Major League Lacrosse, helping Long Island to two championships, and he was named the MLL’s Sportsman of the Year in 2005. He was a four-time All-American at Syracuse, helping the Orange to three national championships.
Powell was also a member of the 1998 U.S. team that won the world championship in Baltimore. He is not playing in Major League Lacrosse this summer, but he was the MLL Offensive Player of the Year in 2005 for Rochester and entered the year tied as the all-time leading scorer in the history of the MLL with 305 points. Powell was a four-time All-American at Syracuse and a two-time national player of the year selection by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
