Canada Wins Gold Medal in Overtime

Tied at 14 after 60 minutes of regulation, Jeff Zywicki scored 28 seconds into sudden-death overtime to lift Canada to victory over the Iroquois Nationals in the gold medal game of the ILF World Championship Sunday. Canada claimed its second consecutive world championship.

Zywicki's goal was his first of the game after dishing out seven assists during regulation play.

Both teams rallied from deficits in the fourth quarter to force the overtime. Canada began the fourth quarter trailing 10-9 before scoring three straight to forge ahead 12-10 with about 10 minutes remaining.

The Iroquois answered with three straight to assume a 13-12 lead heading into the final five minutes. Canada then tallied back-to-back power play goals - both by John Grant - to move ahead 14-13. Dean Hill's goal for the Iroquois with less than a minute remaining knotted the score once more at the end of regulation, setting the stage for Zywicki's overtime winner.

"It was a lot closer than we wanted or expected," Grant (5g-2a) told The Halifax Daily News. "Give them a hand. They played a hell of a game from start to finish and scared the heck out of us. They threw a zone defense at us that we hadn't seen since minor lacrosse, and we never really adjusted to it."
