Frank Riggs To Be Honored With Dinty Moore Service Award

BALTIMORE – Baltimore businessman and longtime lacrosse supporter Frank Riggs will be honored with the William H. "Dinty" Moore Service Award by the US Lacrosse Foundation on Tuesday night at the Hyatt Regency in the Inner Harbor.

The award is presented by the US Lacrosse Foundation to an individual who has actively contributed to the growth and development of lacrosse. Previous recipients of the award were Darren Lowe (2002) and James M. "Mickey" Webster, Jr. (2004).

Riggs was an outstanding lacrosse defenseman at the Gilman School, where he was named All-Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) three times and led Gilman to the MSA championship in 1956. Although Frank continued on to North Carolina for football — he co-captained the Heels his senior year, and was drafted by the Denver Broncos — he never lost his passion for lacrosse and played club lacrosse at UNC.

Following graduation, Frank continued his lacrosse career with the storied Mount Washington Club from 1961-1968. In 1967, Mt. Washington represented the United States and won the inaugural men’s lacrosse world championship in Toronto.

After Frank’s playing days were over he remained a loyal supporter of the sport, stepping into the spotlight once again as the president of The Lacrosse Foundation from 1994-1996 and as the inaugural President of the US Lacrosse Foundation Board in 1998. He served in that role for three years until 2001. Under his leadership, the US Lacrosse Foundation initiated a series of strategic goals to provide unprecedented financial support in an effort to build US Lacrosse staff resources and evolve programming.

Frank is Principal and Vice Chairman of Riggs, Counselman, Michaels & Downes, Inc., one of the largest and most respected independent insurance, risk management, and employee benefits consulting firms in the world. He serves on the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Provident Bank, Greenmount Cemetery, Calvert School and Garrison Forest School. Previously he served on the board of Green Spring Valley Hunt Club and the University of North Carolina Alumni Association.

Dinty Moore was a highly successful coach at St. John’s (Md.) and Navy, winning a combined 10 national championships. He founded The Lacrosse Hall of Fame Foundation, serving as president of that organization for 10 years, and also served as president of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Moore’s legacy to the sport continues through his family. Through their volunteerism and philanthropic support, they are among the most generous benefactors of US Lacrosse and the US Lacrosse Foundation.

The US Lacrosse Foundation is an independent organization that operates in support of US Lacrosse. US Lacrosse, a 501(c)(3) corporation, is the national governing body for men’s and women’s lacrosse. US Lacrosse has more than 215,000 members around the country. To learn more about the organization and the Foundation, please visit www.uslacrosse.org.
