U.S. Women's Lacrosse Teams to Hold Stars & Stripes Weekend in Oregon

BALTIMORE – The second annual US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes Weekend for the U.S. Women’s Lacrosse National Team Program will be held from Oct. 6-7, 2007 in Portland, Ore., at Tualatin Hill Park. The U.S. Elite and Developmental teams will play exhibition games against collegiate teams from Cal-Berkeley, Oregon and Stanford to highlight the weekend’s activities.

"This weekend represents an opportunity to provide a competitive experience for our national teams while helping to showcase the sport in a part of the country where the sport is still developing," said Ann Carpenetti, Women’s Division director for US Lacrosse.

In addition to the U.S. and college teams, four girls’ club teams (two from California, one from Oregon and one from Washington state) with high school players will participate. US Lacrosse is working with its Oregon chapter and the Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association to coordinate development clinics for players, umpires and coaches.

The games begin on Saturday, including a match-up between the U.S. Elite and Developmental teams and a game featuring Oregon and Stanford. On Sunday, the U.S. Elite team will play Oregon and Stanford and the U.S. Developmental team will play Cal-Berkeley and Oregon.

Admission is $12 for a weekend pass, $10 for Sunday only and $5 for Saturday only. Tickets will be available at the event and online on the US Lacrosse Web site at www.uslacrosse.org. Children 6 and under will be admitted free of charge.

The national team program exists as a training program for U.S. teams for international play and to help promote and develop women’s lacrosse around the country. The U.S. has been the most successful country in international competition since the formation of the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations, winning five of the seven World Cup events held since 1982 and three of the four IFWLA U-19 World Championships since 1995, including earlier this month in Canada when the U.S. beat Australia 18-3.
