BALTIMORE– Gregg Mitchell has joined the US Lacrosse staff as managing director for the US Lacrosse Foundation. Mitchell, who has over 30 years of direct experience in all areas of nonprofit fundraising and management, comes to US Lacrosse from the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), where he served as vice president for philanthropy and marketing.
"I am very excited about Gregg’s talents, passion for our mission and organizational fit," said Steve Stenersen, president and CEO of US Lacrosse. "He is a builder who will evolve our financial development capabilities significantly, and provide seasoned leadership over our major fundraising initiatives."
Mitchell will manage the operations of the US Lacrosse Foundation, which was formed along with US Lacrosse in 1998. The Foundation was established to secure greater financial resources to support the growing operations of US Lacrosse. Mitchell will focus on increasing the role of philanthropy to fulfill the US Lacrosse mission to develop the sport, offer outreach programs to new regions and underserved communities, and address a critical need for added physical space in one of Maryland’s fastest growing non-profit organizations. He will also work to build and manage the endowment and reserve funds.
Prior to joining US Lacrosse, Mitchell worked for six years with AWF where he managed a unified philanthropy and marketing effort and directed a five-year, $100 million comprehensive campaign. The campaign featured funding for capital projects in national parks and construction of eco-tourism ventures in Africa as well as program support in conservation science and conservation leadership training. From 1995 to 2001, Mitchell also worked for six years as director of planned giving with the Wilderness Society in Washington, DC.
A twenty-year resident of Baltimore, Mitchell worked at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions for eight years. Within the Hopkins Medical Institutions, he worked as a director of development for the clinical neurosciences at Johns Hopkins during in the 1980s and served as vice president during a $25 million campaign for the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the early 1990s. Between his roles with the African Wildlife Foundation and the Wilderness Society, Mitchell served as chief development officer for the Maryland Science Center and assisted in raising $34.5 million for expansion and renovation of the science museum. Before moving to Baltimore, Mitchell worked for eight years in fundraising with law schools in Minnesota and Vermont.
Mitchell is a 1976 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., where he earned a B.A. in philosophy and art. Mitchell has served on the board of the Gwynns Falls Watershed Association the Friends of Gwynn Falls/Leakin Park and Project PLACE, a transitional housing program for homeless citizens of Baltimore. He has been active as a soloist and choir member with the Episcopal Church of the Guardian Angel and has provided fundraising guidance to numerous local not-for-profit organizations.
