Level 1 Certification

Coaching Education Program

Level 1 Coaching Education Program (CEP) certification is designed to introduce coaches to the responsibilities and philosophies of coaching and how to provide a safe and athlete-centered environment that emphasizes positive growth and sportsmanship. The Level 1 curriculum provides the tools to teach rules, basic individual skills, and basic team concepts to beginning players of all ages. This baseline training is relevant for all lacrosse coaches, regardless of experience.

 PCA "Double Goal Coach 1: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons" (integrated at some clinics)

Certification applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a current US Lacrosse "coach" membership.

Steps to Certificaiton

Purchase a US Lacrosse membership
Membership includes complimentary enrollment into the Level 1 CEP certification program.

You may complete these components in any order, but the recommended path is below.

Pass an NCSI background screening
The criminal background check is based on guidelines from the National Council for Youth Sports, the FBI PROTECT Act and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. FAQ

Complete a Level 1 online course
Tour guides navigate through coaching fundamentals and methods of teaching the sport. US Lacrosse members have free, unlimited access to the men’s and women’s game courses. One-sentence description

Complete a Level 1 instructional clinic
Clinics are seven-hour, on-site, hands-on training sessions, available annually nationwide from October through March and at the US Lacrosse National Convention in January.

Complete a Positive Coaching Alliance Double-Goal Coach (DGC) Workshop
US Lacrosse certified coaches are expected to be Double-Goal Coaches, striving to win while pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports.

Completion

When US Lacrosse has all of your requirements on record, you will receive an email stating that your Level 1 certification is complete. If you reside in an area where certification is required, your certified coach card will follow via email. Reminder that the only component you need to submit is the PCA course. All other requirements are tracked automatically.

Recertification

Once you earn Level 1 certification, you do not need to recertify. To maintain your certification, you simply need to:

  1. Keep your membership current by renewing each year. You can find your expiration date in your US Lacrosse account .
  2. Renew your NCSI background screening every two years after the first screening. Not sure when to do this? Check your expiration date .
