2008 U.S. Men's U-19 Team: Head Coach Chuck Apel


Chuck ApelThe US Lacrosse Men’s Division International Committee selected Chuck Apel of Bridgewater, N.J. as the head coach for the 2008 U.S. U-19 men’s lacrosse team. Apel, who coaches at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, heads a staff that includes assistant coaches Tim Flynn (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Kevin Giblin (Bethesda, Md.) and John Nostrant (Haverford, Pa.).

The general manager for the team is Tom Flatley (Floral Park, N.Y.). The additional support staff includes: assistant general managers – Joe Baccarella (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and George Baldassare (Madison, Conn.), equipment managers – Nathan Bates (Indianapolis, Ind.) and John Jez (Ossining, N.Y.), athletic trainers – Troy Gerlt (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Chris Kury (Red Lion, Pa.) and physicians Brian McGinley (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Brian McGovern (Wilton, Conn.).

Apel has served as the head coach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School since 1980 and has won more than 300 games in his career. He led the school to a state championship in 1998 and in 2001 was inducted into the US Lacrosse New Jersey Chapter and New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association (NJSCA) halls of fame. Apel, an All-American defenseman at Rutgers, was an assistant coach for the 1999 U.S. U-19 team that won the world championship in Australia.

Flynn has been the head coach at Mountain Lakes High School since 1980 and is the winningest coach in New Jersey high school lacrosse history with 452 victories. He has led the school to 17 league championships, 10 county championships and seven state championships. Flynn was inducted into the US Lacrosse New Jersey Chapter Hall of Fame in 1998 and the NJSCA Hall of Fame in 2000. Flynn is a graduate of Montclair State University where he was an all-conference midfielder.

Giblin has built Georgetown Prep into a national power since becoming the program’s first head coach in 1988. The school has won 277 games in his 19 seasons as head coach and has been nationally-ranked 11 times, including first by Inside Lacrosse in 2003 and 2006. Giblin was a two-time captain at Washington College, helping the Shoremen reach the NCAA Division III championship game in 1984 and 1985.

Nostrant has served as the head coach at the Haverford School since 1991, winning more than 225 games along with state championships in 2000 and 2005. A three-time All-American midfielder at Washington College, Nostrant enjoyed a successful playing career with the Baltimore Thunder and Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League. He played in six straight league championship games and was a second team all-pro in 1991 and 1992 with the Wings. He has also coached at the pro level with the Wings and the Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse.
