Team of the Year: 2007 Winning Essay

Hero's Lacrosse, Inc. is committed to excellence in athletics and continued regional expansion of the game of lacrosse. A community-based, federally recognized 501.C3 non-profit organization, Hero's Lacrosse, Inc. was established in 1976 and is the oldest and most widely recognized lacrosse organization in the region.

Created in 1998 as a division of Hero's Lacrosse, Inc., the women's post collegiate club team is made up of athletes from all walks of life that come together for a mutual love of the game.  The players extend their love of the game throughout the community by volunteering their knowledge, time and money to help develop the players of the future.   Steeped in the conviction that sports provide children with a unique character building and positive outlet, the team organizes year-round fundraisers and events to support the organization's investment in that very basic belief.  A few of their programs include:

  • Awarding annual college scholarships for up to four outstanding local athletes each year attending Anne Arundel Community College
  • Donating time, material and funds to local youth lacrosse programs
  • Operating the largest summer lacrosse league in the United States 4 nights a week for men (3rd grade through Masters) and women (4th grade through post collegiate)
  • Hosting an annual Bull & Oyster Roast attended by 300-400 community partners and friends
  • Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with more than 100 donors and sponsors
  • Hosting "Laxtoberfest", an annual fall lacrosse tournament attended by 70 teams from across the Country each year and donating a portion of the proceeds to charities selected by the team each year (past recipients include Susan G. Koman Foundation, Maryland Brain Injury Association / Kids Helmet Education Program, Hurricane Katrina victims, and the Scott Oswell Memorial Fund).
  • Offering clinics throughout the year for players and coaches
  • Participating as annual selectors for the Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse U-13 and HS teams and volunteer staffing of the 2005 World Cup in Annapolis MD

A founding member of the highly competitive Women's Mid-Atlantic Lacrosse League (WMACLL), the Hero's team understands where hard work will lead them.  Each player is selected with a unique role in mind but the foundation of our success has been built on the collective effort of all players and the strong sense of team and community commitment that exists. Each is dependent upon the performance of the other to maximize team performance on and off the field.

Most recently the reigning champions of the WMACLL league, the team has traveled extensively nationally and internationally ~ accomplishing much in its first decade.  In addition to 6 consecutive top 3 rankings in the extremely competitive WMACLL league, the team finished: 1st at "Charm City 2007, 2006 & 2003", "Ocean City Lax Classic 2006", "E-Lacrosse Amsterdam 2004", "Laxtoberfest 2001 & 2002", and "Lax Vegas 2000" tournaments; 2nd at the "Florida Lacrosse Classic 2006", "E-Lacrosse London 2004", "Charm City 2004", "Mardi Gras 2003", "Victoria Slam 2003", Hawaii 2001", and "Lax Vegas 2001" tournaments; and 3rd at the "Ocean City Classic 2002", "Lake Placid 2002", "Mardi Gras 2005" and "Prague Cup 2001" tournaments.

As the team enters its second decade, we look forward to developing new and exciting lacrosse opportunities in our community and continuing to share our love of the game with others.  Thanks for allowing us to share a small portion of our story and we wish all our counterparts the best of luck in 2008!
