AUSTRALIA 17, CANADA 2

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Australia was the last team to play in the IFWLA World Cup, but it came out firing in a 17-2 win over Canada (1-1) in a Pool A game in the 2005 IFWLA World Cup. Australia's Sonia Judd scored three of the first four goals of the game and five overall to earn Player of the Match honors.

Australia held Canada scoreless for the first 40 minutes of the game, limited Canada to just 10 shots for the game and forced 27 turnovers. Australia led 12-0 before Canada's Kylee Reade scored with 19:30 remaining in the second half.

Eight different players scored goals for Australia in the contest. Hannah Nielsen had three goals while Sarah Falcione, Casey Magor and Stacey Morlang added two each. Jen Adams and Sarah Mollison each had three assists for Australia.

Canada returns to action against the United States on Saturday at 5 p.m. Australia plays England on Saturday at 2 p.m.

UNITED STATES 11, WALES 4

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Kelly Amonte Hiller scored three goals for the second straight game and assisted on three others to lead the United States to an 11-4 Pool A victory over Wales in the 2005 IFWLA World Cup at Navy's Glenn Warner Field. The U.S. improves to 2-0, while Wales falls to 0-2.

After Kate Kaiser and Randall Goldsborough put the Americans up 2-0, Hiller accounted for the next four goals. She found Quinn Carney for a marker at 23:58 before finding the back of the net herself on a free position shot just 24 seconds later. Hiller, coach of NCAA Division I champion Northwestern, then found Goldsborough for the Americans' fifth goal in the game's first eight minutes. She concluded the first-half scoring for the U.S. with another free position goal at 7:15.

Wales effectively slowed the pace of play during a 3-0 run that sandwiched halftime. Catherine Coulthard got Wales on the board with an unassisted goal at 5:32 of the first half. Emma Chandler fed Lucy Wray at the 2:36 mark. Neither team scored again until Gemma Morgan brought the Welsh within 6-3 with a free position goal 6:33 into the second half.

"I have confidence in my team," said U.S. head coach Sue Stahl. "Had the score gotten within two goals, it might have become much more nerve-wracking."

The Amercians, however, countered with a 3-0 run of their own, and their defense effectively shut out Wales the rest of the way. Rachael Becker and Quinn Carney each caused two turnovers for the U.S., which allowed Wales to get off just nine shots for the game. Seven Americans accounted for their 11 goals.

The U.S. draws with Canada at 5 p.m. Saturday. Wales will enjoy a day off before battling England at 11 a.m. Sunday.
