2005 IFWLA World Cup Game Recaps

UNITED STATES 20, CZECH REPUBLIC 1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — As the 2005 IFWLA World Cup changed venues to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Tuesday morning the United States didn't skip a beat in the first game of the crossover round. The U.S., the second seed from Pool A, had little trouble taking down the Czech Republic, the fourth seed from Pool B, 20-1.

Danielle Gallagher scored a goal and passed out a game-high six assists for the U.S. to earn player of the match honors. Quinn Carney led all scorers with five goals and Lauren Aumiller (right) added three goals. Three different U.S. players scored two goals, including Crista Samaras, who also had three assists.

The U.S out shot the Czech Republic 44-4 (30-1 in the first half) and led 14-0 at the half.

The Czech Republic got on the scoreboard at the 21:43 mark in the second half with a goal by Veronika Brychcinova off an assist from Dagmar Merrellova. The U.S. scored the game's final four goals.

The U.S. (4-0-1) advances to Thursday's playoff round where it will face a to-be-determined opponent in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. The Czech Republic will play Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Germany.


AUSTRALIA 22, NEW ZEALAND 0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Jen Adams, Courtney Hobbs and Stacey Morlang each scored three goals as Australia defeated neighboring rival New Zealand 22-0 in a crossover game at the 2005 IFWLA World Cup in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Sarah Mollison had a goal and three assists for Australia to earn player of the match honors. Sonia Judd, Casey Magor, Sascha Newmarch each added two goals for Australia and Adams had a game-high five assists.

Australia, the top seed from Pool A, will next play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. New Zealand, the No. 5 seed from Pool B, will play in a first round playoff game on June 29 at 11 a.m. against Scotland.


ENGLAND 22, GERMANY 0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Suzannah Eul had five goals and two assists as England blanked Germany 22-0 in a crossover game at the 2005 IFWLA World Cup. Alisa Stott and Lucy Lynch each added four goals for England and Allison Smith had three goals and two assists. Stott, who also had a game-high four draw controls, was named the player of the match.

England earned the No. 3 seed for the playoff round and will play in the quarterfinals on June 30 at 2 p.m against Wales. Germany plays in the first round of the playoffs against the Czech Republic on June 29 at 2 p.m.


CANADA 17, SCOTLAND 7

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Jennifer Johnson and Brooke McKenzie each scored five goals as an injury-plagued Canada squad held off upset-minded Scotland 17-7 in a crossover game at the IFWLA World Cup.

Scotland's Julie Barr scored two goals in the final 23 seconds of the first half to pull within 6-4 at the half and then Julie Rennie scored 24 seconds into the second half to put Scotland down by just one goal, 6-5. Johnson scored her third goal of the game with 24:15 left in the game to end the Scotland run and then Canada scored the final seven goals of the game to pull away.

Canada, forced to use goalie Jennifer Cassidy as a field player because of its injuries, also got three goals and an assist from Crysti Foote, who played the game with a brace on her left knee. Canada's Tami Jones and Margaret McKee both left the game with injuries and Deborah Mendel did not dress because of a broken ankle from Monday night. Kristen Haldeman made 11 saves to lead a strong Canadian effort on defense.

Scotland was led by Barr with three goals and Rennie with two. Scotland will play New Zealand in a first round playoff game on June 29 at 11 a.m. Canada advances to the quarterfinal round on June 30 at 11 a.m. where it will play Japan.


JAPAN 12, WALES 8

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Japan jumped out to a five-goal halftime lead and held off Wales for a 12-8 victory in the final crossover game of the 2005 IFWLA World Cup.

Goals by Kana Uwai and Akiko Wada to open the second half gave Japan a 10-3 lead, but Wales slowly fought back. Wales scored four straight goals, two by Emma Chandler, and cut the lead to 10-7 with 12:59 to play on a goal by Rosalind Lloyd. Uwai then added two more tallies for Japan to put it out of reach.

Uwai finished with five goals and three assists and Wada had four goals. Goalie Maki Nishimura made nine saves for Japan to earn player of the match honors. Chandler and Gemma Morgan each had two goals for Wales.

Japan's victory earned it the No. 5 seed for the quarterfinal round. Japan (5-0) was the lone Pool B team to beat a Pool A team in crossover play and will now face No. 4 Canada in the quarterfinals on June 30 at 11 a.m. Wales (0-5) plays England in a quarterfinal match on June 30 at 2 p.m.
