CZECH REPUBLIC 4, GERMANY 2
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Daniela Drevikovska made 10 saves while allowing just two goals to lead the Czech Republic past Germany 4-2 in a first round playoff game of the 2005 IFWLA World Cup at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Drevikovska and the Czech defense held Germany scoreless for the final 33 minutes of the game.
The Czech Republic jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half, helped by a pair of assists from Dagmar Merrellova, before Germany got on the board with 13:15 remaining in the first half on a goal by Nora Schroeder. Valerie Krizova scored to put the Czech Republic back up by three before Germany answered with just under four minutes to play on a goal by Anike Altenhain. That was the last goal either team would score as both goalies were solid. Drevikovska made three saves on free position shots in the final 10 minutes of the game and German goalie Sabine Paul finished with six saves.
The Czech Republic advances to the quarterfinal round where it will face top-seeded Australia on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Germany will play in the ninth/10th place game against New Zealand on July 1 at 11 a.m.
SCOTLAND 18, NEW ZEALAND 4
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Scotland overcame an early New Zealand lead to win 18-4 and advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2005 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations' World Cup. Amanda McKie led the Scottish effort with six goals and two assists to earn player of the match honors.
New Zealand (0-6) got goals from Anna Strand and Michelle Turner just 36 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead with 17:23 remaining in the first half. Julie Rennie answered less than a minute later to tie the game, starting a 14-0 Scotland run that stretched into the second half. All six of McKie's goals came during the run. Val Houston added four goals for Scotland and Julie Rennie and Julie Barr each had two.
Turner led New Zealand with two goals and goalie Jess Evans made 16 saves. Evans made 10 of her saves in the first half to keep New Zealand within striking distance.
Scotland (4-2) will play the United States in a quarterfinal round game on June 30 at 5 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. New Zealand will play in the ninth/10th place game on Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m.
