US Lacrosse is issuing this clarification to answer recent questions about equipment legality issues for the 2018 season.

Question: Which US Lacrosse boys’ youth lacrosse head specifications are legal for play in 2018?  

Answer: Both the 2017 NFHS Spec Heads and 2018 NFHS/NCAA Spec Heads are legal for play.  All head sizes depicted in the image below will remain legal for field players for the next few years.

Question: What are the NFHS or NCAA head specifications are legal for play in 2018? 

Answer: All field players’ lacrosse heads used in NFHS or NCAA games must meet the specifications listed below. 

Question: How can I easily identify if a lacrosse helmet is legal for play?

Answer: All lacrosse helmets that are legal have met ND041 - Standard Performance Specification for Newly Manufactured Lacrosse Helmets with Faceguard. Look for the following markings permanently displayed on the helmet.

Question: How can I find a list of lacrosse helmets that are NOCSAE Certified before buying?

Please be aware that older model helmets that have been reconditioned according to the manufacturer’s requirements can still be legal for play and may not be listed on the SEI website.  

Question: What is the important information to have about lacrosse balls?

Answer: As of January of 2014 all lacrosse balls used in US Lacrosse, NFHS, or NCAA games must meet NOCSAE Lacrosse Ball Standard (ND049) and include the words "Meets NOCSAE Standard." The standard was developed for safety purposes to ensure that balls being manufactured are of high quality and they have been tested for quality control before entering the market. The NOCSAE lacrosse ball standard established requirements for ball weight, compression, circumference, and bounce supplied by manufacturers. Recently there have been some counterfeit balls in the market that could contain NOCSAE & SEI logos but were not certified to the NOCSAE lacrosse ball standard.

Question: How can I identify which balls meet the standard and are legal for play before making a purchase?
