Peter G. Voelkel, one of eight new Class of 2014 inductees into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, says that one of the most difficult losses in his playing career served as the catalyst for his greatest successes.

Voelkel, being inducted on October 25 as a truly great player, was a four-time All-American as a midfielder at the University of North Carolina, including first team honors in both 1982 and 1983 when he was also selected as UNC’s team MVP. Additionally, Voelkel was tabbed as the USILA’s midfielder of the year in 1983. He was a three-time selectee to the All-ACC team (1981, 1982, 1983), and named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary Team in 2002. North Carolina won two ACC championships during his tenure, and also captured two NCAA national championships. Voelkel was selected to play in the USILA’s North-South All-Star Game as a senior in 1983.

The career-defining loss Voelkel references came during his freshman season at North Carolina, an 11-10 double-overtime loss against Virginia in the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The pain from that loss helped produce back-to-back undefeated national championship campaigns in 1981 and 1982.

A summary of Voelkel’s career highlights:
