Defending champion Denver Club is ranked No. 1 in the first WCLA (Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates) Division II coaches poll of the year, released today. The Pioneers are 6-2 on the season.

Undefeated Concordia (Ca.), which is 6-0, is ranked No. 2 in the poll, despite having beaten Denver, 8-7, in a head-to-head match-up on February 19.  The Eagles also own victories over No. 9 Utah State and No. 18 St. Benedict.

No. 3 Loyola (Md.) Club, No. 4 SMU and No. 5 Grand Canyon round out the top five.

The first poll of the year was delayed one week, primarily due to the washout of the Santa Barbara Shootout in mid-February. Five of last year’s 12 Division II championship qualifiers were scheduled to attend the Shootout.

"The first ranking is always hard, but all the league reps were able to give good feedback on their leagues teams which helped with the limited number of games played so far," said Mindy Stone, chair of the D-II rankings committee. "Having the Santa Barbara Shootout cancelled made this poll very difficult."

One of the games cancelled at the Shootout was a rematch of the 2016 D-II championship game between Denver and Utah. The Utes were not included in the new Top 20 poll because they had no games played to date. Meanwhile, the 2016 champs are focused on the new season.

“We are excited about being the defending champs, but we are (playing) this season with a clean slate,” said Denver’s All-American defender Kelley Dingens, one of five returning All-Americans for the Pioneers.

The WCLA features 80 Division I teams and 155 Division II teams that compete under the US Lacrosse umbrella. The 2017 season will conclude with the D-I and D-II national championships in Salt Lake City, May 10-13.
