Steve Mitchell, one of eight new Class of 2014 inductees into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, is the product of a lacrosse family. During his youth, he would be mesmerized whenever his dad would get together with former teammates to share stories.

Mitchell, being inducted on Oct. 25 as a truly great player, was a two-time All-American at Johns Hopkins University, and became the first long stick defensive midfielder to be named as a first team All-American. Mitchell played on three lacrosse national championship teams at Johns Hopkins (1984, 1985, 1987) and was selected to JHU’s all-time lacrosse team in 1987. The Blue Jays compiled a 47-6 record during his four seasons. Mitchell also helped the U.S. National Team to the gold medal in both 1990 and 1994, and he was selected to the All-World Team following the 1990 World Games.

His father’s tales served as great inspiration for his own successes.

“I just wanted to be in that club. I wanted to have those conversations,” said Mitchell, who clung to his father’s advice to help make that a reality. “He told me ‘do whatever it takes to make your team do well and it will be worth it.’”
