The official program for The World Games 2021 was published following the annual general meeting of the International World Games Association (IWGA) last weekend, and lacrosse will be included for the second time.

The World Games 2021 will take place in Birmingham, Ala., from July 15-25, 2021, marking the first time the event has been held in the United States since the inaugural event was held in Santa Clara, Calif., in 1981. The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the IWGA under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.

Approximately 3,600 athletes from more than 100 countries will compete in 30 sports during The World Games.

The nature of the lacrosse competition has not been announced, but will be determined by the IWGA and the Federation of International Lacrosse.

Lacrosse made its debut at The World Games last summer in Wroclaw, Poland, with the United States claiming gold in a six-team women’s lacrosse competition. Playing under modified rules with 10 v 10 competition versus the standard 12 v 12 in international women’s lacrosse, the United States defeated Canada 11-8 in the gold medal game.

The World Games will begin just as the 2021 FIL Women’s World Cup will be concluding. US Lacrosse will host the World Cup at Towson University from July 7-17, 2021.
