US Lacrosse, the national governing body of lacrosse, and MedStar Sports Medicine, a medical leader in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. region, announce the second installment of their health & performance speaker series.

The newest presentation will feature Dr. Justin Tortolani, an orthopedic surgeon and spine specialist at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, who will address the issue of “Low Back Injuries in the Lacrosse Athlete.”

This presentation is targeted for a non-medical audience and seeks to provide helpful information for lacrosse players and parents.

Tortolani’s presentation will be on Thursday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.

The event is free and open to the public, although an RSVP is needed to reserve a spot. Seating is limited.

The one-hour session will include a brief discussion of anatomy, lacrosse shooting mechanics related to back injuries, evaluation and treatment, and how to avoid injury. It will conclude with a question and answer period.

The “Health & Performance Series” is an extension of the official marketing partnership between US Lacrosse and MedStar Health.

“We’re pleased to have this ongoing opportunity for collaboration with MedStar in order to provide important and useful health and performance information to our members,” said Dr. Bruce Griffin, director of the Center for Sport Science at US Lacrosse. “Our shared commitment is to provide educational resources to benefit parents, players, coaches and health care providers.”

Dr. Tortolani is currently the director of the MedStar Union Memorial Spine Program. He is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship trained in spine surgery. His vast experience includes treating all disorders of the spine, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, adult and adolescent scoliosis, and spondylolisthesis (unstable vertebra that slips out of alignment). Tortolani has been named a Baltimore Magazine Top Doctor six times.

"We’re excited that the partnership between US Lacrosse and MedStar Sports Medicine allows us to feature expert speakers providing the latest research based information about lacrosse sports medicine,” said Justin B. Cooper, director of elite sports therapy and program development for MedStar Sports Medicine.
