US Lacrosse announces Meghan O’Connor of Ipswich, Massachusetts and Rett Waggoner of Auburn, Alabama as the recipients of 2018 Michael Breschi Scholarships

Established in 2007 to honor the life and memory of Michael Breschi, son of University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse head coach Joe Breschi, the scholarships are awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college and are the son or daughter of a coach who serves as a full-time employee of an educational institution.

Criteria considered include academic qualifications, extracurricular activities, internships, community service, and employment experience. US Lacrosse administers the scholarships, with winners selected annually by the Breschi family.

O’Connor is a 2018 graduate of Ipswich High School, where she earned all Cape Ann League honors in both volleyball and lacrosse. She is attending Quinnipiac University. One of her teachers at Ipswich had strong praise for O’Connor’s leadership and determination.

“Meghan is a hardworking and caring young lady who is able to work with a wide variety of student personalities and seems to be able to raise the level of their work,” said Judith Hoyle. “Whatever Meghan decides to do, she will accomplish it, as her work ethic is excellent. Her leadership is evident.”

Waggoner is a 2018 graduate of Auburn High School and is attending Auburn University. He served as lacrosse team captain and class president, and was the Alabama recipient of the prestigious US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award. His high school coach describes him as a young man of impeccable character.

“Through his consistent leadership and his tremendous drive to improve, Rett has been a great force for good on our team and at our school,” writes Ben Hunt in his letter of recommendation. “I firmly attest to Rett’s outstanding lacrosse ability, his leadership and service, and his exceptional character and likeability.”

Joe Breschi notes that Meghan and Rett are deserving recipients of this year’s scholarships.

“On behalf of my wife Julie and our four daughters, I’m humbled and honored to announce this year’s recipients,” he said. “Rett & Meghan stood out amongst their peers as two amazing individuals and terrific students who exemplify a tireless work ethic in the classroom and on the field. The combination of their community service efforts and passion for success will help carry them as they enter their respective universities.”

“US Lacrosse is honored to work with Coach Breschi and his family in awarding this scholarship to exemplary student-athletes such as these,” said Ann Kitt Carpenetti, vice president of lacrosse operations at US Lacrosse. “US Lacrosse would like to wish our best to Meghan at Quinnipiac University and Rett at Auburn University. They both have outstanding academic and athletic credentials, and are poised for great future successes.”
