Ivy Santana and Lyle Warrior were selected by the Tewaaraton Foundation as the 2018 recipients of the Tewaaraton Native American Scholarships, presented by US Lacrosse. They were honored during the Tewaaraton Awards ceremony last night in Washington, D.C.

Awarded to one male and one female student each year, the scholarships honors high school students of Haudenosaunee / Iroquois heritage who exemplify high character, leadership and academics, both on and off the lacrosse field. In 2011, US Lacrosse entered into a 10-year financial commitment to support the scholarship.

“US Lacrosse is grateful for the opportunity to support such an important aspect of the Tewaaraton Foundation’s mission,” said Steve Stenersen, president and CEO of US Lacrosse. “US Lacrosse and the Tewaaraton Foundation share a belief in the power of lacrosse to enrich the lives of those who play.”

Santana is a citizen of the Seneca Nation who resides in Bucktown, N.Y. She is a senior captain of the varsity lacrosse team at Lake Shore High School and will continue her lacrosse career at the University at Albany next year. In addition to lacrosse, she played basketball at her high school, participated in the school’s Academy of Business & Finance and performed community service work. She says that lacrosse has helped provide her a successful path to be the “hard worker, role model, indigenous woman and student” that she is today.

Warrior is a citizen of the Seneca Nation who resides in Perrysburg, N.Y. He is a senior at Gowanda Central High School where he plays lacrosse and runs cross country. He intends to study physical therapy at Houghton College beginning this fall. In addition to athletics, Warrior is an excellent student known for volunteering in class and as a youth representative of the Seneca Nation. He believes that lacrosse has changed his life and made him a better person. He hopes to spread this message to younger generations through coaching and teaching.
