US Lacrosse, the national governing body of lacrosse, and MedStar Sports Medicine, a medical leader in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. region with more than 50 specialized physicians and 70 locations, jointly announce the launch of a new educational series focused on lacrosse health and performance.

The inaugural presentation in the series will feature Dr. Karen Sutton, team orthopedic physician for the U.S. Women’s National Team, who will address the issue of “Upper Extremity Injuries in Youth Athletes.”

Dr. Sutton’s presentation will be on Wednesday, April 26 at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland, and will be available for free online viewing beginning on May 3. Attendance at the presentation is by invitation.

The new “Health & Performance Series” is an extension of the recently announced marketing partnership between US Lacrosse and MedStar Health. US Lacrosse and MedStar will be hosting quarterly presentations as part of this new series, with varied speakers and topics.

“We’re pleased to have this opportunity for collaboration with MedStar in order to provide important and useful health and performance information to our members,” said Dr. Bruce Griffin, director of the Center for Sport Science at US Lacrosse. “Our shared commitment is to utilize our marketing platforms to provide greater educational resources that will benefit parents, players, coaches and health care providers.”

A former player at Duke University, Sutton currently works as an attending physician at Yale New Haven Hospital and as an assistant professor at the Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to her current role as a member of the medical staff for the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team, Sutton also served previously as the team orthopedic physician for the gold medal-winning U.S. under-19 women’s team in 2011.

"We’re excited that the partnership between US Lacrosse and MedStar Sports Medicine will allow us to initiate this exciting Health and Performance Series, which will feature expert speakers providing the latest research based information about lacrosse sports medicine,” said Justin B. Cooper, director of elite sports therapy and program development for MedStar Sports Medicine. “These educational events will occur several times per year and will be available online for medical professionals as well as players, parents and coaches."
