As part of its ongoing commitment to creating a safer sports environment, US Lacrosse today launched an online education and training platform as part of its efforts in keeping abusive behavior out of lacrosse.

The online training is being coordinated through a partnership with the U.S. Center for SafeSport, and is offered free of charge to all US Lacrosse adult members. The online training is the latest expansion of the national governing body’s SafeSport Program, and follows last October’s implementation of mandatory background screenings for all adult coach members.

Adult members with an active USL membership can take the training by using the MyAccount feature on

US Lacrosse considers player safety to be among its highest priorities and takes seriously the responsibility to help protect athletes from abuse within the sports environment.

“We have a duty to lead on this critically important issue,” said Steve Stenersen, president and CEO at US Lacrosse. “We’re committed to doing what is needed to protect our kids and to make our sport safer. There’s no room for people who abuse others in lacrosse.”

The online training is divided into three learning modules, and requires a one-time commitment of approximately 90-120 minutes to complete fully. The course provides education and training on how to recognize if an athlete is being abused, how to prevent abuse from happening, and how to respond or help if abuse has already occurred. The module titles are:

● Mandatory Reporting
● Sexual Misconduct Awareness Education
● Emotional and Physical Misconduct

The online training is voluntary at this time, but will become a mandatory requirement for US Lacrosse adult coach membership later this year. Recent federal legislation requires that all national youth organizations provide abuse awareness and prevention training to its adult members.

“It takes all of us to be accountable and to work together to ensure that we create and maintain a safe lacrosse environment,” said Abby Morris, manager of the US Lacrosse SafeSport Program. “This educational curriculum is designed to help us all become better trained in recognizing negative and hurtful behaviors.”

Launched in 2013, the US Lacrosse SafeSport initiative is designed to provide safeguards against all forms of physical and sexual abuse or misconduct.
