The roots of lacrosse will be honored on Saturday, August 10 as the Chesapeake Bayhawks highlight the history of the game during that evening’s Major League Lacrosse match-up against the Denver Outlaws.

As part of Native American Celebration Night, the Bayhawks will be hosting numerous members of the Native American community to share in the love of the “Creator’s Game.” Those in attendance at the game will include Piscataway Conoy Tribe - the Chesapeake Bay region’s local tribe, the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs, the National Congress of American Indians, and representatives from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

In addition, members of US Lacrosse’s Urban Lacrosse Alliance will be attending the game as guests of the Bayhawks and US Lacrosse is serving as a unified partner for the event.

Andrew Lee, a member of US Lacrosse’s Native American Advisory Council and chair of the New York board of directors for the National Museum of the American Indian, has been involved in helping the Bayhawks plan details of the celebration.

“For the game to grow, we’ve got to pay close attention to diversity and inclusion,” Lee said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know the Native roots of lacrosse. I’d love to see lacrosse in general embrace its roots and honor its roots.”

The Bayhawks have two players of Native descent – Lyle Thompson and Brendan Bomberry - on their 2019 roster and view this event as an opportunity to shine a brighter spotlight on the origins of lacrosse.

The Bayhawks have planned a series of social media posts this week to further celebrate Native American culture, including sharing of videos that are housed in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum. The schedule also includes the next episode of the vignette series Chesapeake Bayhawks: Under the Helmet, highlighting Thompson.

Game time at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis on Saturday is 8 p.m., with pregame tailgating and activities beginning at 5:30.
