GUILDFORD, England — In the first game of a five-game English tour, the U.S. women’s national team opened with a 21-7 victory over the English developmental squad. That team name was deceiving though, as the English side brought intensity right from the outset.

The English squad opened the scoring on a goal by Sophie Brett a mere 1:16 into the game before the U.S. gained control behind a strong first half by Alyssa Murray. Murray scored three first half goals to help the U.S. to a 13-3 lead at the break.

“We came together really quickly, worked out some of the kinks, and just got on a roll really fast,” said Murray, who finished the game with five goals.

England’s developmental team cut the margin to 14-7 early in the second half, but the U.S. then blanked them for the final 24 minutes of the game to pull away.

“We played together really well and I was excited about the discipline that we showed on the ride, not getting out of control,” said U.S. team head coach Ricky Fried.

Murray’s five goals led the U.S. and she added an assist for a six-point day. Taylor Cummings (3g, 1a), Shannon Gilroy (3g) and Michelle Tumolo (3g, 2a) each added hat tricks for the U.S. as well. Laura Merrifeld, Sophie Morrill and Jenny Simpson each had two goals for England.

The U.S. continues its tour with games against Scotland and the English national teams on Saturday. The England game will be streamed live on at 11 a.m. Eastern. The tour wraps up with a doubleheader against Germany and Wales on Sunday. Fried felt Friday’s opener provided many teachable moments leading into the weekend.

“It’s important that we make sure we don’t become complacent,” said Fried. We had a little spot in the middle where they outworked us. We have to make sure other teams earn what they get.”
