Richard Speckmann spent four decades on the sidelines at Nassau (N.Y.) Community College, amassing one of the most outstanding coaching resumes at any level of lacrosse. He recorded 477 wins and captured 20 junior college national championships while producing nearly 200 All-America players.

Speckmann retired following the 2010 season with a career winning percentage of over 75 percent. In addition to the 20 NJCAA championships during his tenure, he helped Nassau qualify for the four-team finals in 39 of his 40 seasons.

But, he says, coaching was never about the trophies.

“Each year, it was just to see how good we could be,” Speckmann said.

Selected as the NJCAA’s national coach of the year six times, Speckmann is one of nine new inductees in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is being inducted as a truly great coach

Speckmann says his motivation for coaching was always pretty basic.

The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, a program of US Lacrosse, was established in 1957 to honor men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life.

Speckmann and the other members of the Class of 2019 will be officially recognized at the induction ceremony in Hunt Valley, Maryland on Saturday, October 19. RPS Bollinger and the Markel Insurance Company serve as sponsors of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
