So, you coach youth lacrosse, why is inclusion important to you? What does this word inclusion mean anyways, and what do I need to know as a coach? Inclusion strategies – what does this mean and how can they benefit me as a coach?

“I’m new to coaching and I struggle with a player on my team who is always so unfocused, can’t seem to follow directions and really has a hard time getting along with his teammates – it makes it tough because I’m spending a lot of time correcting and directing this one player”

“I’m a U8 boys’ coach and have been coaching for over eight years. A mother approached me to say that her son is interested in playing lacrosse but he has autism and although he’s a great athlete and could be a good player, he’ll need a little extra help with the social part of being on the team and interacting as a teammate”

“I love coaching and have had four winning seasons with my teams. I noticed a player signed up for this new season who I know from town. She has Down syndrome. Shouldn’t she just join a Special Olympics-type team?

Question: What do these coaches all have in common?

Answer: They could benefit from the Inclusive Coaching: Real Tools to Help Every Player Succeed this Season, a free webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 27 @ 8 pm (Eastern), and so can you!

Lisa Drennan, founder of MERGE Diverse Abilities Inclusion Consulting, will help to answer the question around what inclusion means and how implementing some simple strategies can help you to be a more effective coach, and build a team and culture that is welcoming, engaging and supportive of players with diverse abilities.

Participants in this webinar will start by learning, inclusion philosophies and how they match US Lacrosse’s commitment to be encouraging, understanding and accepting of all its membership. Coaches will then learn about preventative strategies and tools to help you become more confident and equipped to work with players with diverse abilities including autism, ADHD, and/or other developmental disabilities. End the session being part of a discussion on working with families, leaving some time for your questions.

These inclusion strategies are intended to be used by all coaches with all members of your team. So, whether or not you have experienced a scenario as described above, this webinar will be beneficial to you now and in the future (with great tips applicable to situations outside of coaching too!).

MERGE and US Lacrosse have partnered to bring resources and expert guidance to coaches nationally on how they can best support players with diverse abilities. In addition to the upcoming webinar, a series of resource pages for coaches is being developed. Look for instruction videos and other opportunities for continued education around the topic of inclusion of diverse abilities.
