Andy Copelan, the architect of the Waterdogs’ rise from expansion team to Premier Lacrosse League champion, announced Wednesday that he will step down as Philadelphia’s head coach.

Copelan will remain on as the interim general manager until a new head coach is found.

Under Copelan’s watch, the Waterdogs won the 2022 PLL championship, appeared in the 2023 PLL championship game and were the No. 1 seed in the 2024 PLL Championship Series before falling in the title game to the Boston Cannons.

The Waterdogs were 1-4 as an expansion team in the 2020 bubble season but immediately improved to 6-4 in 2021. They’ve been one of the league’s top teams since.
