Weekend One-Liners: Conference, Non-Conference Must-Watches

March 22, 2024
Matt DaSilva
Marc Piscotty

The Ides of March have passed, and we find ourselves at the intersection of conference play and still-tasty non-conference matchups. The Big Ten, Ivy League and Patriot League cannibals are out in full force, yet Syracuse renews a historic rivalry and Duke gets a neutral-site game against Denver just days after a top-10 ACC showdown in the Dome.

For the fan, it’s all good. Nothing but good.

Here are 10 games to watch with one sentence on each. Rankings are per the USA Lacrosse Division I Men’s Top 20. A complete schedule of televised and streamed games can be found on our TV Listings page. All times Eastern.

No. 2 Army (7-0) at Boston University (5-2) – Friday 6 p.m. (ESPN+)

Before simply conceding the Patriot League to America’s Team, note that it’s been a decade since anyone ran the table in the conference (Loyola in 2014) in a non-pandemic campaign.

No. 7 Yale (4-1) at No. 13 Cornell (4-2) – Saturday 12 p.m. (ESPN+)

The Bulldogs keep losing key players to injuries and just keep winning anyway, at least partially a testament to the underappreciated excellence of Tewaaraton candidate Matt Brandau.

Harvard's Collin Bergstrom.
Harvard's Collin Bergstrom has six ground balls and four caused turnovers in 2024.
Rich Barnes

No. 17 Princeton (4-3) at No. 14 Harvard (6-1)

Saturday 12 p.m. (ESPN+)

Nothing says “lacrosse is a game of runs” more than Princeton going down 8-2, scoring 10 unanswered goals and then losing 15-14 on a last-second goal against Cornell last week.

Vermont (3-5) at Albany (2-5) – Saturday 1 p.m. (ESPN+)

Neither of their records look great right now but Vermont just removed NJIT from the ranks of the unbeaten and Albany (three one-goal losses) briefly had Virginia on the ropes thanks to Jake Piseno and Silas Richmond.

No. 8 Maryland (5-2) at No. 19 Michigan (5-3) – Saturday 2:30 p.m. (BTN)

Maryland’s losses to Notre Dame and Virginia and OT escape against winless Brown have exposed the lack of flow in an offense that was expected to struggle some considering the Terps switched offensive coordinators in late December.

No. 9 Syracuse (8-2) at Hobart (3-4) – Saturday 5 p.m. (HWS)

How much did defensive coordinator John Odierna’s stock rise Wednesday with Syracuse’s masterful performance against Duke and the coming-out party for its “Junkyard Dawgs” man-down unit?

No. 11 Georgetown (5-2) at No. 16 Richmond (5-3) – Saturday 6 p.m. (ESPN+)

The Hoyas are getting excellent production (two-plus goals per game) out of their second midfield and flashing terrific d-middie depth during this their five-game winning streak.

No. 6 Denver (6-1) vs. No. 3 Duke (8-2) (in Severn, Md.) – Sunday 2 p.m. (FloSports)

Duke’s dud at the Dome raises some concerns about its offense, but freshman Patrick Jameison continues to perform well in goal and there’s too much talent and IQ on the other side of the field not to get things back on track.

No. 4 Penn State (6-1) at Ohio State (5-4) – Sunday 2:30 p.m. (BTN)

Anchored by Marcus Hudgins (Ohio State) and Alex Ross (Penn State), both defenses rank in the top 10 nationally, so first to 10 wins?

No. 10 Johns Hopkins (5-3) at No. 18 Rutgers (6-2) – Sunday 4:30 p.m. (BTN)

Navy always gives Hopkins fits and the Blue Jays, whose three losses all have come by one goal, will have had nine days to get right for Rutgers.
