How can lacrosse become a safer game and remain popular without losing its identity? It starts with how youth lacrosse is taught.

This is the time of year when officials associations, boards and groups around the country start planning for next season, when we come to the table with big ideas about training, educating, assigning and recruiting lacrosse officials.

The biggest topic no one likes to discuss is retention.

Who is coming back and who hung up their whistles? Why? Why did we lose four first-year officials with potential? Why did we lose three of our veteran officials?

After a three-day tryout that included 110 players at Stevenson University, US Lacrosse today announced the 25-player training roster for the U.S. Women’s National Under-19 Team.

US Lacrosse today announced the 112-player tryout pool for the 2015 U.S. Women’s National Under-19 Team, with tryouts getting underway Monday at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md. The three-day tryout will see girls high school players from 18 states compete for 25 roster spots on the squad that will defend gold at the 2015 Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 World Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Seven different players scored multiple goals, led by Alex Roesner with five, as the United States dominated Australia 23-1 to advance to the championship game of the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship.

US Lacrosse has selected 39 players to the 2014-15 U.S. Women’s National Team, which will train in the lead-up to the 2017 FIL World Cup.

The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame welcomes eight new members as the Class of 2014.

As an official, you have three responsibilities: Keep the game safe, keep the game fair and act in a professional manner.

The difficult part comes when you make a necessary and appropriate safety or fairness call and one sideline rants and raves. Maintaining your cools when the crowd is booing, players are grumbling and coaches are complaining is not easy. Knowing the rules, being in the right spot and looking professional are all well and good, but what you need in these situations is solid game management skills.

Often times as a coach and teacher, I have witnessed the frustration of the mistake. The stick slams the ground, the head goes down, the mind goes to an alternate dimension.
